The Legal Assistance Centre (Namibia)

The Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) was founded in 1988 by human rights lawyers, church leaders, trade unionists and student leaders, who were concerned about the human rights situation in Namibia. The LAC is a member of the Namibia Non-Governmental Organisation Forum (NANGOF) and works closely with a number of organisations and institutions to reach the broader community.

Its mission statement is:
“The Legal Assistance Centre is a public interest law centre and strives to create and maintain a human rights culture in Namibia, through education, research, litigation, legal representation, advocacy and lobbying.”

The Centre works in three main areas:

  • Legal advice and litigation
  • Education and training
  • Research, advocacy and lobbying

Its projects include:

  • Human rights and constitutional litigation
  • Legal education
  • Gender research and advocacy
  • Juvenile justice
  • Land, environment and development
  • Aids law
  • Namibia law reports
  • NAMLEX – an index to the laws of Namibia
