It explains the new laws in simple language and gives examples to help people understand them. The guide also contains a section on common questions about rape, a section on how people react to rape, and guidance on what to do if one is raped, how to help someone else who has been raped, and where specifically to get help in Namibia. This booklet contains a detailed explanation of the Married Persons Equality Act, No. 1 of 1996. It explains this law in simple language and gives examples to help people understand it. The guide first provides background information on the new law with reference to the Namibian Constitution, international obligations, the two kinds of marriages applicable in Namibia, i.e. civil and customary, and the problems that necessitated such a law. The guide then gives more detailed information on civil and customary marriages, and information on debates around the Married Persons Equality Act and on the question of whether or not it is working.
